The police procedural is a proven formula, as billionaire Law & Order producer Dick Wolf would happily attest. And although there's no familiar chunk-chunk sound in this new play from Pine Box Theater Company, there's plenty in the taut writing and muscular performances to hold your attention. (Speaking of sound effects, the ominous thunderclaps punctuating the opening night performance turned out to be real.) Keith Huff's recent hit A Steady Rain moved up from the small stage of Chicago Dramatists to the Royal George en route to a Broadway transfer; this similarly well-crafted tale of two Chicago cops investigating a case also looks to have legs. Playwright Joshua Rollins knows a thing or two about crime drama: he played a police officer opposite Gary Oldman and Christian Bale in the final scenes of The Dark Knight.

The Second Stage says…

It's 6 a.m. An undercover female police officer has disappeared overnight on the South Side of Chicago. The last person to see her alive is now the primary suspect. Two veteran officers with complex ties to the missing officer—as well as to each other—lead the interrogation. The Shield meets Memento in this world premiere play.
