In 1990, author Hisham Matar's father, an outspoken critic of Libyan autocrat Muammar Gaddafi, was kidnapped by government forces, imprisoned, and tortured. This real-life tragedy – and the victim's still-unknown fate – colors Matar's new novel, Anatomy of a Disappearance, a presciently timed tale of a kidnapped exile told from the viewpoint of his teenage son. Matar, who emigrated from the Middle East as a child and now lives in Britain, rose to prominence in 2006 after his debut novel, In the Country of Men, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. As Robert F Worth recently wrote in the New York Times, "[Matar] seems uniquely poised to play the role of literary ambassador between two worlds that have longed been locked in mutual suspicion and ignorance."
