“In Kōbō Abe's darkly comedic drama, tormented ex-soldier Fukagawa and grifter Oba partner in business during Japan's still-reeling early postwar years. Their product? Photographs of the dead, sold back to customers at astronomical rates, only after the pair has cemented their first ruse — a wildfire rumor that ghosts have rejoined the living. Although perhaps overlong, Vitalist Theatre's often-funny production wisely chooses to keep the play's original setting and backdrop, asking us to tease out the modern-day parallels (the scam reminds one of "nothing trades" like credit default swaps). Jamie Vann stands out as the scheming Oba; and director Jaclynn Jutting employs subtle stylistic flourishes to heighten the absurdity of the characters' untrammeled political logrolling, government-corporate synergy, and free-market fanaticism. Sound familiar?”
