Roman Polanski doesn't make bad films. He may be known for his bad decisions off set, but on set, he remains a master craftsman. His latest film, Carnage, a screen adaptation of Yasmina Reza's Tony Award-winning play God of Carnage, is a dark comedy about two couples who meet to discuss a schoolyard scuffle between their 11-year-old sons. Confined to a Brooklyn apartment, the foursome's encounter gradually escalates from uncomfortable politeness to full-on verbal assault, with vomit and scotch making inspired cameos. Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly are the seemingly down-to-earth upbringers of the victim, while Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz play a power couple who don't like losing. Relying heavily on the prowess of the actors, Polanski's mischievous and meditated production leaves an enchantingly tart aftertaste.
