The Chicago premiere of David Mamet's crackling new play, Race, gives 2009's Broadway production a serious run for its money in the Goodman's bold production. Throwing racial tension and America's ugly prejudicial past into his usual mix of sexual politics and power plays, Mamet sets Race in the office of a law firm confronted with a case in which a wealthy white man has been accused of raping a black woman, and sets into motion an ever-tangling knot of his signature delicious, dirty ambiguity. Knockout performances, particularly by Geoffrey Owens and Marc Grapey — as the lawyers — and several gasp-inducing moments are sure to leave audiences talking.
