This taut, streamlined Tempest hurtles through CST with gale-force creative energy. Condensing Shakespeare's play to an hour-long romp through a fragmented landscape of highlights, co-creators Jessica Thebus and Frank Maugeri employ the premise of Prospero as an increasingly delusional and disillusioned imperial power obsessively reenacting his high points of revenge and reconciliation before freeing his slaves, the nimble Ariel (Samuel Taylor) and lumbering Caliban (Adrian Danzig), and drowning his book. While Danzig marauds across the stage in revolt, Taylor plays with time and humor, manipulating puppets and masks now rapidly, now slowly. At certain moments the two meet in encoded communiqué, striving to transcend their colonial figureheads beneath Prospero's watchful, if disordered, eye.
