In Donald Margulies' Time Stands Still, a harrowing and personal look at the difficult ethics of war journalism, Sarah, a talented photographer who lives for her job, has just returned home from Iraq, where she was nearly killed. While recovering from serious injuries, she longs to return to work. But her longtime partner, James (also a journalist), wants to finally settle down. It is Sarah's editor's much-younger girlfriend who invokes the central question: how can photojournalism really help those suffering in war-torn countries? Is it genuinely advantageous or exploitative? It's an enormous question, but the play — anchored by a solid performance from Steppenwolf ensemble member Sally Murphy — succeeds by bringing it home, and offering a powerful, sometimes disturbing, look at how it can impact a relationship.
