Some theatre is timely, some striking — and some vital. Tackling the increasingly hostile anti-immigrant climate in the United States — witness the Obama administration's record-breaking deportation statistics and Alabama's HB 56 law — Home/Land is a complex, meticulous tapestry crafted over two years by its talented student-actors. Seamlessly conjoining narratives from participants in the immigration-rights struggle and targeted groups, the actors manipulate the functional set with expertise and grace. Enacted by these individuals, drawn from Chicagoland's Latino community, and guided by top-tier theatre practitioners, the stories resound as news footage cannot. The piece's layered emotional notes culminate neither in defeatism nor contentment but in an energy mirroring that of the youthful cast. Not to be missed.
