A logical complement to Global Cities, Model Worlds, the Pocket Guide to Hell collective has created a multimedia exploration for the little-known tragic tale of the failed construction of the Spectatorium. Built for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, the building was intended to be the world's largest theater. The grandiose vision of Steele MacKaye, the Spectatorium was dedicated to telling the story of Columbus' journey as realistically as possible, featuring live plants, actual water, and "a cast of thousands." Alas, the dreams of MacKaye fell back to Earth suddenly when the American economy collapsed before the opening of the Exposition, forcing him to demolish the structure and sell it for scrap — the artists leave us to find the moral of the story.
