“A ringmaster takes the stage and promises magic, mystery, and death. Director/playwright Nathan Allen, along with his talented cast and production team, deliver all elements times ten. Don't blink as magic tricks fly ad libitum and ad infinitum: a man is cut in half, a goldfish spontaneously generates, and a bullet levitates. Dennis Watkins is brilliant as Harry Houdini, an artist shackled by his art, driven by childhood pathos to conquer the ever-present Death. Tapdancing into Houdini's heart is Bess (Carolyn Defrin in a standout comedic performance), who becomes the magician's lovely assistant and wife upon the splendid cue of a mandolin. From Watkin's grand entrance to a nail-biting finale in the infamous Water Torture Cell, House Theatre's Houdini quickly hooks you and doesn't let you escape a moment of their extraordinary magic.”
