No recent film event has enraptured critical circles more than TIFF's comprehensive, traveling retrospective of Robert Bresson's career, the first of its kind in 14 years. Bresson's name is seemingly bound by law to be preceded by "austere," but his approach, all resolutely compact precision, self-limited against conventional dramatic devices, not world experience. (See major '60s work, with limited sound design, coercive framing, and a preference for non-actors, and the later triumph L'Argent, in which the filmmaker's much-analyzed Catholicism renders itself more ambivalently.) Especially if Bresson registers only as the granddaddy of stern Euro moralism (we admit: we were once there), take this hyper-rare opportunity to have preconceptions blown.
