What Cathy Wilkes says about her work might ultimately be true, that the separation between herself as artist and the viewer "has remained unbridgeable." But that doesn't mean you won't have ideas or strong responses to the materials and situations that Wilkes creates. Placed on a grocery store checkout conveyor belt, repulsive bowls and jars caked with dried out remains of food that could be oatmeal emit a slight odor. Nearby a female mannequin sits on a toilet with horseshoes hanging off her body. The anti-aesthetic is in full force here, as the installation hints at the new age of scarcity and austerity: the cupboard is bare.

The Renaissance Society says…

Over the past five years, Irish artist Cathy Wilkes (b. 1966) has garnered international attention for her installations whose signature elements are set amongst, and outfitted with, accoutrements of an abject, quotidian nature. Wilkes' highly subjective work consists of objects (strollers, soiled dishes, dolls, dried flower petals) that recur as symbolic leitmotifs. Her process of selection and arrangement of materials is measured and refined, drawing equally on a precise formal language and the most intimate of personal experiences to create a compelling autobiographical thread. The Renaissance Society presents I Give You All My Money whose title, like that of several other works, has a biblical reference regarding sacrifice.
