“Mickle Maher's play is premised on such an inherently absurd concept — a set of 11 short scenes, all variations on a panel discussion between Beethoven and Quasimodo about their inability to create a sound effect called for in Chekov's The Cherry Orchard — that it can sometimes be easy to miss the quiet meditations on failure beneath the one-off surrealistic comedy. Performed for the first time as an opera, Oobleck's current incarnation of the Hunchback Variations both elevates the humor and brings out the real tragedy of the thwarted collaboration. With music by composer Mark Messing (cofounder of Mucca Pazza) referencing a wide spectrum of operatic history and styles, the dialogue is elevated to the epic treatment it deserves, while remaining droll as ever.”
