How to create a performance about social problems without becoming mired in lament? Hip-hop theatre quartet Universes covers the gamut of issues challenging the United States these days: homelessness, poverty, religious extremism, lack of healthcare, hate crimes, war, anti-immigrant sentiment, and the disenfranchisement of millions. But Ameriville, infused with a multitude of musical genres — jazz, gospel, hip-hop, folk, barbershop, and hints of pop — never feels like a downer. The group's fluid and rhythmic choreography creates melody and comedy out of topics as queasy as gentrification and as stark as lynching. At times the litany of ills feels overwhelming, but the minimal set, awash in colors, and the group's poise, passion, and wit offer notes of hope and reassurance.
