“Like each of the play's enlightened, well-meaning young professionals, all ideological systems prove desperately flawed in Ayad Akhtar's bold, searing look at perceptions of Islam in America. At the center are Amir (Usman Ally), a Pakistani-American mergers-and-acquisitions attorney, defined more by ambitious careerism than his happily (and logically) lapsed Muslim roots; and his wife (Lee Stark), a Caucasian artist who taps the Islamist tradition in her practice. When another couple visits for dinner, personal secrets and rivalries (plus booze) lead to explosive, ethnic-underpinned volatility. Despite a curious ending, Akhtar's critical lens is sharp and fearless, tackling organized religion, platitudinous liberalism, and American Dream mythology. Still, Disgraced doesn't peddle in nihilism; it triumphs in candor.”
