It's Chicago 1893 and a landfill east of Michigan Avenue is literally supporting a neighborhood as well as the wealth of a washed-up entrepreneur, George Wellington Streeter. This dark and vile musical crystalizes this truculent time while unraveling the details of a vengeful murder. Buffering the grim plot is a litter of comedy including cholera haute couture and singing and dancing saints. Another quirky highlight is an inept association of a distiller that launches a straight-up silly song. Teeming with vulgar jokes and variety numbers to poke fun at the historical characters and gilded age, Streeterville doesn't take itself too seriously but does make you wonder if our city's political scandals have diminished over the years or simply held to a hellish status quo.
