“Just like its artistic point of reference (the Howard Zinn-affiliated documentary The People Speak), this live-reading/performance benefit brings in the Hollywood megawatts in service of a good cause. Matt Damon joins a cast of Chicagoans, including Robert Breuler and Alana Arenas (Steppenwolf Theatre), journalist Rick Kogan, and poets Kevin Coval and Idris Goodwin, to perform staged readings and songs from "the rebels, dissenters, and visionaries of America's past." Selections range from Woodie Guthrie and Sam Cooke tunes to a Studs Terkel interview with Emmett Till's mother. Forecasts call for a misting of self-righteousness; but that should be counterbalanced by the charitable (and educational) entertainment.”
