“The Hypocrites take on a play as metatheatrical as they are, with some mixed but generally entertaining results. Luigi Pirandello's early-1920s play follows the drama that ensues when a group of characters, created but then abandoned by their first playwright, crash a rehearsal and convince a theatre company to enact their story. We get plenty of self-deprecating, appropriately postmodern asides and actions added for this production (including an extremely funny trope based on the common accusation that the Hypocrites butcher the literariness of plays in their adaptations). Six Characters is a dated play, and there are some extended moments of frustration as characters expound on philosophical issues of theatre that now seem old-hat, but the show overall is fast-moving and funny.”
