Bertrand Bonello's languid portrait of a turn-of-the-century Parisian brothel made several critics' Best of 2011 lists, but it's only now finding a Chicago theatrical run. (It was previously available via Amazon Instant Video and IFC on Demand.) Staying almost entirely within a single location, House of Pleasures imagines a sisterhood of luxurious captivity, long before the modern era of sex-work-as-empowerment that it implicitly allies. Bonello maintains an atmosphere of soft-focus claustrophobia throughout, employing several keen formal flourishes: anachronistic music cues, voluptuous set design, lush cinematography, and subtly disorienting temporal shifts. So even as we see the ugly details, the sad sense of transience is impossible to escape.
