“With their previous LP, Mirror Mirror (2010), local noise-poppers made good Unicycle Loves You jumped from serviceable, if somewhat boilerplate, indie rock to a potent, full-passion delivery — light-touch psychedelia and diamond-cut songwriting. (A bath in the national music-press spotlight that followed was well warranted.) Their follow-up, Failure, promises more still: early offerings "Wow Wave Cinema," "Piranha," and "Sun Comes Out (and I Don't Care)" provide the giddy immediacy of empty-calorie indie pop; but the disaffected harmonies, overdriven keyboards, and dirty guitar fuzz (not to mention a darker introspective pall, in general — the LP is called Failure, after all) offer more nutrients than ULY once seemed capable of. Effervescence should always have so much teeth.”
