“To label a particular indie-rock act "Velvet Underground-influenced" is usually a pretty facile move; but there's no getting around it with Cate Le Bon, a beguiling singer/musician whose vocal delivery recalls fellow Welshman John Cale in its accent and (especially) Nico's chilly/playful phrasing. Moreover, her triangulation between light noise, guitar pop, and drone clearly follows the post-Lou Reed slack-sophisticate continuum. Le Bon's sophomore effort, Cyrk, takes these cues — plus a noticeable handful from '60s psych-pop and '90s indie — and creates something personal, lived-in, and (most key) very approachable. Melodic gestures are plentiful, and head-bobbing simple pleasures are never far from Le Bon's avant-leaning surface. All quirk considered, it's extremely easy stuff to love.”
