Marina Abramović's The Artist is Present at the Museum of Modern Art over the summer of 2010 was hailed as a success, decried as egocentric, and spawned at least one hilarious tumblr of hipsters crying when they silently engaged the artist in the museum's atrium. Likewise Abramović's plans for a performance at a gala at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, where the heads of nude performers protruded through a table, was met with controversy from the well-known dancer Yvonne Rainer. Given the allegations in Rainer's letter protesting the performance, it will be extremely interesting to hear Abramović's lecture on the future direction of performance.

The Smart is pleased to partner with the Chicago Humanities Festival in bringing one of the twenty-first-century's most widely recognized culture makers to Chicago. In this event, Abramović will give a lecture on performance and its future, reflecting on this provocative and enduring art form. As part of Feast: Radical Hospitality in Contemporary Art, the Smart will present a new version of Communist Body/Fascist Body, a seminal work by Abramović and her longterm partner and collaborator, the German artist Ulay. Presented by the Smart Museum of Art and the Chicago Humanities Festival.
