Just a few days ago, on February 7, the United States' near-total embargo on Cuba turned 50 years old. While the government has stopped the flow of money and fine cigars, one thing that has not been interrupted is the exchange of ideas. For Arte No Es Fácil, artists from the States have been paired up with artists in Cuba to present collaborative work in Chicago's own Links Hall. The barriers of language, technology, and distance may have been challenges to the artists at first, but they all became productive obstacles to overcome, react against, and subvert through performance, video, and sound.

Arte No Es Fácil (Art Is Not Easy) is part of a Links Hall Artistic Associates festival.

Inspired by interviews with Cuban Artists at the 2009 Havana Biennial, Arte No Es Fácil (art ain’t easy) is a project based on creating relationships beyond pictures between Cuba and the U.S. through the manifestation of art. The first phase of this project is a three –week interdisciplinary festival of performance and installation January – March 2012 at Links Hall. Each weekend features a pairing of emerging artists from Havana and Chicago with similarities based on art-form, content or strategy. The pairs collaborate on new pieces of work featuring performance art, video, performed and written text, dance, photography and experimental music.

The co-creators plan on remounting the festival in Havana later in 2012.
