“Ava Luna's doo-wop post-punk concept may not seem outwardly novel in a pop landscape where the Billboard 200 has sported three TV on the Radio albums (an unavoidable reference point). But Ava Luna emphasize the oddness of their contradictions, even as they streamline; and they're no novelty. The New York City seven-piece mixes the grooves and harmonies of classic R&B and neo-soul with left-field beats and distortion reminiscent of sophisticated noiseniks like This Heat, shards of skronk and grime underneath well-manicured rhythms. There's something impressive about a crescendo that plays like a funk bandleader's knee-drop showstopper and a fractured free-punk blowout.
