“Werner Herzog and his signature German accent are back again with Into the Abyss, a documentary that uses a triple homicide case in a small Texas town as a way to explore the psychology of killing. Granted a brief interview with Michael Perry, the 28-year-old death-row inmate involved in the crime, Herzog sleuthed out the rest of the sad and gruesome tale from there. Interviews with accomplices and family members of both the perpetrators and victims as well as death row chaplain and former executioner provide Herzog the means to raise questions about criminal activity and state-sanctioned murder. The Abyss may not be the most pleasant place to visit, but you'll be glad you went with Herzog as your tour guide.”
