Before the Joffrey Ballet showcased her choreography, Twyla Tharp was virtually unknown. Now, both the dance legend and the legendary dance company are practically household names, for dancers and balletomanes alike. Robert Joffrey and his life partner, dancer Gerald Arpino, championed the original idea of fusing modern dance with classical ballet, so they launched their company by touring in a station wagon — rock 'n' roll style. With that level of passion, it's easy to see how the Joffrey Ballet became a cultural treasure, but the voyage wasn't without obstacles. Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance chronicles the success and stumbling blocks of a startup dance outfit, from the evil oil baroness who insisted upon renaming the company after herself, to the NEA grant that ended. Eventually, Prince was so impressed with the company, he donated music to the Joffrey Ballet — just one of the company's well-earned breaks. This documentary shows how an iconic American institution continues to inspire, both personally and professionally, despite countless highs and lows.
