Barbara Kopple's searing documentary seems to encapsulate America's whole violent history of labor strife as it examines a 1973 Kentucky coal-miners' strike. The bluegrass soundtrack is filled with native twang, but Kopple's clear-eyed alignment with the strikers supersedes regionalism. Thirty years after it won an Oscar, Harlan County USA's exploration of local economic systems might seem like a pre-globalization relic, but its depiction of social realities is timeless and still makes an impact. It certainly impressed Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters), who made it his selection for Robert K Elder's book The Film That Changed My Life. James and Elder appear live for a post-film discussion.
