Contemporary shadow-puppet theater company Manual Cinema combines complex, cinematic homemade shadow puppetry — on overhead projector! — with live actors in silhouette, imaginative video, and electronic soundscapes to create DIY work that's anything but rustic or simple. For their latest creation, the collaborative FJORDS, Manual Cinema teams up with string quartet Chicago Q Ensemble and Portland, OR poet Zachary Schomburg, creating a series of live multimedia shorts. Based on Schomburg's poems, the piece chronicles  "a young man as he struggles with work, family, love, and what would kill him." The trailer is online now, and, as usual, it looks pretty astonishing.

Poetry Foundation says…

A multidisciplinary, multimedia collaborative work by Manual Cinema and the Chicago Q Ensemble, FJORDS imaginatively presents the poetry of Zachary Schomburg. Toeing the line between live scored cinema and performance art, FJORDS features shadow puppetry, live silhouette, video, and manipulated slide projection to create haunting visual renderings of Schomburg's poems accompanied by an original score. Each performance starts with a reading by the poet.
