George Lewis is a musician, composer, and professor whose visionary work — both musical and literary — has mapped the terrain of experimental music for nearly four decades. A member of Chicago's groundbreaking Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1971, Lewis also wrote an exhaustive, must-read chronicle of the movement entitled A Power Stronger Than Itself in 2008. For this event, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Lewis is joined by MCA frequenters ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble), a veritable musical merry-go-round of young, ambitious talents, bent on revising the way we think about new music; the way in which it's performed; and the power it can hold. The program features classic Lewis compositions alongside plenty of new, original material bearing his influence.
