The city’s oldest alternative space reaped national exposure when it unveiled its new digs a few years ago. The Doug Garofalo-designed center provided a model for progressive architectural design with a relatively low price tag; and that sense of forward-looking, “serve the work” practicality still permeates. With an eye toward emerging artists, HPAC has played a key role in launching artists such as Juan Angel Chavez and Dawoud Bey, underlining the Kenwood gem’s status as a go-to destination to catch the latest on-the-up visionaries.
