Something of a South-Side page-oner inverse to the DIY spaces in Pilsen and Bridgeport, the Smart Museum at University of Chicago in Hyde Park boasts an impressive collection of classical and early modern art. Still, Smart stays keenly away from the overly academic with excellent, unlikely exhibitions with eye toward the contemporary (see 09’s Heartland) that routinely - and deservedly - land on year-end best-of lists for Chicago Museum Shows.
