Ai Yamaguchi was born in 1977 and lives and works in Tokyo.
Originally trained in textile design, Yamaguchi makes work that combines the refined aesthetics of classical Japanese art with the pop-culture sensibilities of contemporary Japanese animation. She often depicts the fictional world of Touge no Chaya (The Brothel of the Mountain Pass), set in the Edo period.
Yamaguchi's work is currently on display in her second solo exhibition at Roberts & Tilton Gallery in Culver City. Read our listing for more information.
