Raised in the post-1960s wilds of Woodstock, NY, David Benjamin Sherry is a New York-based photographer and multimedia artist.
Sherry received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MFA from the photography department at the Yale University School of Art.
Sherry is a contemporary traditionalist, creating his fantastical works without the aid of any digital technology — every vivid color and hallucinatory vision is the result of hundreds of hours spent experimenting in the darkroom, using only photographic paper, an enlarger, and his own artistic tenacity.
Sherry's work focuses on love, passion, sexuality, death, and mysticism. Displaying elaborately staged photographs constructed in the studio next to heavily manipulated images of the epic American landscape, Sherry imagines a hybrid Technicolor world where wood nymphs roam the planet's most iconic cultural sites, including Mykonos, Greece, Mt. Shasta, Washington, White Sands, New Mexico, and Yosemite, California.
Sherry's work is currently on view through Saturday, September 13th, 2008 in the Love Is a Cannibal show at Sloan Fine Art in New York.
