David Bowie, born 1947 as David Robert Jones in London, first burst onto the music scene in 1969 with his smash single "Space Oddity." Since the '70s, when he gained international fame with his flamboyantly androgynous stage persona Ziggy Stardust, Bowie has been known for his theatricality, musical innovation, and spectacular visual displays.
To date, Bowie has released 23 studio albums, had 18 top-ten singles, and received a Grammy for Best Music Video. Having sold over 100 million records, Bowie is one of the best-selling musical acts of all time.
Bowie has also acted in a number of feature films; portraying Andy Warhol in Julian Schnabel's Basquiat, starring as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson's Labyrinth, and even playing Lord Royal Highness in episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants.
Bowie-related events in NYC include: midnight screenings of Labyrinth at the Sunshine; Early Music Videos by David Bowie, hosted by Thurston Moore, and Bowie Ball at Santos Party House.
