Raised in the Skagit Valley, a farming community in Washington State, Michael pursued photography during his undergraduate major in Psychology and Art. After earning an MA in Visual Communication at Ohio University, he won the College Photographer of the Year Competition and completed an internship at National Geographic Magazine before beginning a freelance career in 2006.
In June 2007, his essay profiling industry in the Pearl River Delta Region of China was broadcast on PBS during The News Hours with Jim Lehrer. In November 2007 American Photo named him one of fifteen emerging artists - "a new generation of photo pioneers." In 2008 he was selected for the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass, named a Magenta Emerging Photographer, a PDN 30 and a 'Young Gun’ by The Art Directors Club in New York.
Recent assignment work includes stories in Canada and California for National Geographic Magazine, a piece on Broadway for GEO France and Olympics coverage for ESPN The Magazine.
