Robert Bowen was born in California in 1975. A former graffiti artist, he went on to attend art school in San Francisco. His initial emphasis was on sculpture, but Bowen later decided that he would rather be painting and made the transition back to two dimensions.
Over the past decade, Bowen has actively exhibited his artwork at venues throughout the US, including the YouTube Headquarters in northern California earlier this year.
Recently, his work has evolved into an elaborate series of inside jokes, mixing pop-and sub-cultural icons with portraits of friends, family, and animals, influenced by everything from Disney to cult classic movies. Although he continually keeps the ideals of the old masters in mind, Bowen's work sits well within the confines of modern art, and has even been given the "lowbrow" tag.
