Ryan McGinley
Cover for Issue 314
San Francisco
Issue 314 May 6, 2008

Ryan McGinley (born 1977) is an artist/photographer from New York City. His pieces include mostly color images of friends and lovers, as well as youth on the fringes of society (skateboarders, graffiti writers, and so forth). At 24, he was the youngest artist to have a solo show in New York's Whitney Museum of American Art. He has also had solo shows at New York's PS1 and in Spain at the MUSAC in León. He is represented by Team Gallery in New York. In 2007, McGinley was awarded the Young Photographer Infinity award by the International Center for Photography.

This photograph, Ann (Slingshot) (2007-08), is part of McGinley's latest body of work, I Know Where the Summer Goes. Over the summer of 2007, McGinley traversed the United States with 16 models and three assistants, shooting 4,000 rolls of film. The inspirational images for the project were culled from the kinds of amateur photography that appeared in nudist magazines during the '60s and early '70s. McGinley had chosen a very specific itinerary that would bring his troop through the incredible range of landscapes that are available across the US and a carefully planned a battery of activities, sometimes using special effects.

The images are courtesy Ratio 3 Gallery, San Francisco. The show, titled Spring and by Summer Fall, opens Fri May 9. Take a look at our listing to learn more.
