Sheila Pree Bright is a mixed-media artist based in Atlanta. Her large-scale, provocative works combine a wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary culture with an emphasis on challenging perceptions of identity.
Bright's work has been featured in a number of solo and group exhibitions including shows at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington, D.C., the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and the Leica Gallery in New York.
Bright's photographs have also been published in a number of books and publications, including Reflections in Black: A History of African American Photographers (WW Norton, 2001) and, most recently, Black: A Celebration of a Culture (Hylas Publishing, 2004).
Bright is the recipient of the 2006 Santa Fe Photography Award, the En Foco New Works Photography Award in 1999, and the National Bronica Award in 2001. A National Graduate Seminar Fellow at the Photography Institute in 2002 at Columbia University in New York, Bright received her MFA in photography from Georgia State University in 2003. She was recently selected as the inaugural recipient of an artist-in-residency at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in 2007.
