Terri Timely
Cover for Issue 249
Chicago
Issue 249 June 23, 2009

Ian Kibbey and Corey Creasey are Terri Timely. Since their time at UC Berkley, they have made several award winning shorts, as well as music videos and commercials. Their directing style mesh’s live-action, animation, illustration, and good old-fashioned handmade grit. They have directed music videos for Modest Mouse, the Wrens, Joanna Newsom, Air Traffic, and the Little Ones. More recently, the team directed a Comcast campaign for Goodby, Silverstein, and Partners and an Adidas/Footlocker campaign for Nitro that gained over 1.5 million hits on YouTube in its first few weeks.

Synesthesia

"We heard about synesthesia a while ago from a friend of ours who studies cognitive science. We both thought it could provide an interesting framework for some visual ideas we had been kicking around for awhile. To us, it’s not really important that the viewer have any prior knowledge of synesthesia, or that they make the connection between our film and the condition. We looked at it as way to create a sort of internal logic to some of our visual ideas, and we thought this strange condition, where people’s senses get mixed up, could be an interesting starting point. Our main goal in making the film was to make something that was visually inventive, but also reflected our penchant for films that are structured with a sort of absurdist logic. Or perhaps, it was just an excuse to shoot fireworks indoors, have cats jump out of speakers, and explore our interest in Vietnamese retro-future art direction."
