Heide Hatry's animal-part art
Sculptor crafts figures from skin and meat
Heide Hatry creates life out of death. Sculpting women's heads, Hatry starts with clay, but makes her figures more lifelike by using treated pigskin to give the illusion of human flesh; raw meat to mold sensual lips; and fresh pigs' eyes to provide a haunting gaze. Adding wigs, clothes, and accessories, she readies her models for their close-ups.
Hatry shows some skin. Perhaps taking a lead from serial killer Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs, Hatry has fashioned clothing, babies, and even the American flag from pigskin.
She has multiple personalities. For the exhibitions Skin and Meat After Meat Joy, Hatry created fictional artists Christine Bofinger and Betty Hirst, complete with their own artist pages on Saatchi Online.
Every strange creation has a story. Her latest project, Heads and Tales, matches her handmade maidens with a group of talented female writers, who bring the figures to life through words.
Visit the artist's website, see her current show, watch a video tour of Meat After Meat Joy, and buy the Heads and Tales book.

Architecture is great metaphor material. Buildings are ostensibly simple, everyday background constructions, but haunted with significance — memories, emotions, stories. Maybe that's why they have a starring role in so many songs. Check out our countdown of the best in architectural jams.
