Arthur Russell's Sleeping Bag
New releases honor the late legend
Bridging the gap between disco, folk, dub, and classical composition, Arthur Russell's music is as eclectic as it is elusive. This week's release of The Sleeping Bag Sessions completes a trifecta of recent reissues recalling the late cellist and New York disco don's versatility behind the boards.
Russell was a disco Adonis. On The Sleeping Bag Sessions, the composer/songwriter's music epitomizes the term "mutant disco," creating bizarre sound fields that operate like alien dance-floor fillers.
The urban warrior was also a country king. Last October's folk-focused compilation, Love Is Overtaking Me, twanged with all the backwoods charm of a hippified Hank Williams.
His story rivals his sound. While Russell's music speaks for itself, an inspired recent documentary, Wild Combination, reveals that the musician's sad, often tortured story is anything but ordinary.
Download sample tracks from The Sleeping Bag Sessions, watch the Wild Combination trailer, stream songs from Love Is Overtaking Me, and buy Russell's music.
