Dutch author offers a traveler's retrospective
Novelist Cees Nooteboom delves into history's real stories through the lens of his voyages in Nomad's Hotel: Travels in Time and Space.
It heads off the beaten timeline. Readers are swept along with Nooteboom's impulsive globetrotting (he flew to Gambia on a whim) and observations, while learning about the writers, artists, and historians who have shaped each locale.
He's a cross between Pico Iyer and Paul Theroux. Whether he's writing about Ovid and Hesiod in Venice or paying homage to Tim Robinson's beloved Aran Islands, the award-winning Dutch writer is engaging and down-to-earth.
Noteboom is a stranger in strange lands. As with his fiction (which is often mentioned as Nobel-worthy) the author revels in the role of the outsider. His self-aware unfamiliarity with languages, customs, and signs only heightens his unshakable wonderment at the world.
