To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Santa Monica’s Georgian Hotel, the Santa Monica's hotel's Veranda Restaurant is offering two special retro menus: a classic dining menu and a Prohibition-era cocktail menu. Both featuring dishes and libations popular in the 1930s, the drink menu features such vintage cocktails as the French 75, the Brown Derby, the Negroni, the Manhattan, the Rob Roy, the Paloma, and the Daiquiri. Flavorpill’s favorite dish on the retro dining menu, updated for modern tastes, is the savory, not-too-sweet Monte Cristo sandwich. Also available: a Waldorf Salad (updated for LA tastes with grilled chicken, arugula, and a light fruit-filled dressing); Steak Diane (topped with mushroom/madeira sauce and accompanied by scalloped potatoes and grilled asparagus); pork medallions with lemon-caper sauce and roasted red potatoes; a delicious veggie meatloaf made with fire-roasted tomatoes, toasted walnuts, celery, peppers, and herbs; and finally a scrumptious dessert that isn’t easy to find nowadays: floating island (meringues atop a pool of crème anglaise, topped with berries). Enjoy these dishes on the beautiful veranda just across from the Pacific Ocean at this Art Deco gem that was once frequented by crème de la Hollywood, such as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, and Fatty Arbuckle.
