Five characters search for identity while bees disappear all around them. West Coast Premiere.
Collaborative Artists Ensemble has announced the West Coast premiere of A Strange Disappearance of Bees, written by Elena Hartwell following critically acclaimed productions in Vermont and Detroit. Directed by Steve Jarrard, the production is set to open on October 18 for a limited engagement through November 17th only.
A man walks into a bakery in a small town searching for his father. The population of bees in this small town seems to be dropping. For the girl at the counter, the bakery is the last vestige of her only parental figure. She loves a local farmer who can never be hers. The father's love, a beekeeper, deals with loss as well: the now rapid decline of her prize colony. The secrets of the past converge with the complicated present in Elena Hartwell's moving, funny and hopeful story of five individual lives, forever connected.
Playwright Hartwell first learned about Colony Collapse Disorder at a time when her own life had started to fragment. The sudden losses of her job, home, confidence, significant other, and beloved canine companion led her to think about the parallels between human experiences and all the possible causes of CCD. The disappearance of millions of honeybees has been attributed to pesticides, cell phone interference, mites, an HIV-like virus, and the large–and less nutritious–mono-crops of big agro-businesses.
“It struck me that sometimes people disappear too. Cancers from chemicals, isolation through technology, a disconnect from community. Out of those ideas came this play. As my own life got back on track, a new love, four new animals, a new home, a re-imagined career, the drafts became more hopeful at the end. This play, to me, is art representing life and life representing art.”
A Strange Disappearance of Bees boasts a sterling cast for it’s 12th production. Led by Royal Shakespeare and BBC Alum Jean Gilpin and Emmy winner Ian Patrick Williams, the production also stars: Christian T. Chan, Brian A. Pollack and Meg Wallace.
