Here’s a show that’s perfect for the die-hard romantic who doesn’t mind a little skin. Starring Julie Atlas Muz and British actor Mat Fraser, Beauty and the Beast joyously blends their real-life love story with the fairy tale. At the show’s open, the pair speak directly to the audience; Fraser explains that he suffers from phocomelia, a rare birth defect that has left him with foreshortened arms and no thumbs, and Muz, a former Miss Coney Island, chimes in that she’s from Detroit. From there, the pair, with the help of Jonny Dixon and Jess Mabel Jones, launch into an inventive gothic re-telling of the classic fable employing puppetry, DIY animation, clever costumes by Kevin Pollard, beautiful sets, nudity, and a variety of sexual positions. Directed by Phelim McDermott, this unique and captivating romp turns up the heat on disability, sexuality and romantic love.
