Berkeley is home to many kite connoisseurs — you can find some of them haggling and bragging along University Avenue at their impressive, colorful street vendor kite stands. And every summer, the best and most interesting kites launch from Cesar Chavez Park (jutting directly into the bay, offering the best along-the-water east-to-west view) for the Berkeley Kite Festival. Some of these kites are as big as planes and as artistically endowed as a Mission District mural, so grab a blanket and bring a camera and pack a picnic and come enjoy the Berkeley sky as canvas for the creatures of the wind.
