On Derby Day 2014, Wythe Cinema will host a very special screening of "Breadcrumb Trail," a feature-length documentary that tells the story of Slint, perhaps the most legendary band to emerge from the American independent underground of the 1990s.
An unusually mysterious band from a very well-documented era, Slint had roots in the fruitful Louisville, Kentucky music scene of the Eighties. Its members grew up performing in several bands together: playing hardcore shows while still in junior high, touring with Samhain at the age of 14, recording landmark records in Squirrel Bait while still teenagers, then forming Slint and recording the classic albums Tweez and Spiderland before they could drink legally. But Slint broke up before Spiderland was released in early 1991. Spiderland was largely greeted with bewilderment and apathy upon its release, but has since been recognized as one of the most influential and lasting aesthetic statements of its era.
Two decades later, filmmaker Lance Bangs assembled "Breadcrumb Trail" from the first on-camera interviews ever with band members and previously-unseen footage of teenage Slint members writing and arranging songs from Spiderland, interspersed with commentary from key contemporaries including James Murphy, David Yow, Ian MacKaye and Steve Albini.
A Q & A will follow with founding Slint members Brian McMahan, David Pajo, and Britt Walford, and moderated by Jon Fine, the guitarist for Bitch Magnet and author of "Your Band Sucks," a memoir of a quarter-century in the American indie underground, which will be published by Penguin in 2015.
And join us before the screening as we stream the Kentucky Derby, and acclaimed Reynard chef and Louisville native Sean Rembold serves Derby-inspired food including pimento cheese sandwiches, cucumber benedictine, mini hot browns, pulled pork sliders, and bourbon chocolate pecan pie. These treats won't last all night, so get 'em while you can!
