Jim McKay's unsentimental portrait of female adolescence
Directed by Jim McKay | 2000
With Melissa Martinez, Anna Simpson, Kerry Washington, Jackie Robinson Steppers Marching B, Marlene Forte
During a sweltering summer in Crown Heights, best friends Lanisha (Washington), Maria (Martinez), and Joycelyn (Simpson) navigate a host of teenage anxieties—the closing of their high school, unplanned pregnancy, and tumultuous family lives—all between rehearsals with the legendary Jackie Robinson Steppers Marching Band (which pops up to punctuate the movie with rousing performances). This refreshingly raw, unsentimental portrait of female adolescence was shot on location in Crown Heights and captures the sights and sounds of a Brooklyn summer with near-documentary realism.
with Jim McKay, Hannah Weyer, and Anna Simpson
Screening will be followed by a Q&A with writer-director Jim McKay, actress Anna Simpson, and Hannah Weyer, author of the new novel On the Come Up. There will be a book signing with Weyer after the Q&A.
