Call Me Kuchu profiles the remarkable life and tragic death of LGBT rights activist David Kato, the first openly gay man in Uganda, a country which in 2009 proposed to enact a bill that would make homosexuality punishable by death. A harrowing portrait of human rights in one of the least gay-friendly countries on earth, Call Me Kuchu is as much a call to arms as it is a celebration of an astonishingly courageous group of friends and activists. The documentary won the Teddy Award for best film featuring LGBT themes and topics at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival as well as the audience award for best documentary at Frameline 36.
