Charles Phoenix and His Chinatown Field TripLos Angeles Chinatown (943-951 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA) Map it $39
Pop culture maven Charles Phoenix partners with CicLAvia for a sure-to-be-entertaining tour of Chinatown. Phoenix, a native Angeleno who lives and breathes the history of LA, shares with tour-goers his well-honed knowledge of local history and the sometimes-kitschy delights of this themed environment. The event is a fundraiser for CivLAvia, the civic group that increases the sense of community in our city with events that occasionally close sections of the city to cars, encouraging bicyclists and pedestrians to take to the streets. The itinerary for this excerpt from Charles’ “Disneyland” Tour of Downtown Los Angeles includes the Seven Star Cavern Wishing Well, a Chinatown highlight since 1938; Hop Louie, the pagoda-shaped restaurant serving up Chinese dishes since 1941; a virtual time capsule from 1938: the law office of Y.C. Hong, the first Chinese person to graduate from USC Law School; and several shops, including Jade Tree, selling Asian antiques in a mid-century Chinese modern interior since 1942; F. See On Antiques, Chinese antiques’ dealers since 1870; Fong’s, a gift shop selling vintage Chinese kites and snuff bottles since 1952; Realm, a gorgeous, clean-lined gift shop housed inside a former Chinese restaurant; and K.G. Louie, famed since 1938 for its neon Buddha signage and Chinese curios. Your ticket price includes the tour, egg rolls from Hop Louie, and more. There are three tour times avialable: 12pm to 1pm, 1:30pm to 2:30pm, and 3pm to 4pm.
